He served his country in the U.S. Army and went on to work as a lead machinist at United Technologies, contributing to the space program. After his retirement, he worked as a security guard at Goose Pond Colony.<br \/>\nMr. Childress married Laura Jean Hall, his loving wife of 60 years, and together they had three daughters.
