Five Alabama schools have been named 2023 National Blue Ribbon Schools, including Skyline High School in the Jackson County School System.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Education today<\/span>\u00a0recognized 353 schools\u00a0as\u00a0National Blue Ribbon Schools<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for 2023, including\u00a0five\u00a0schools in\u00a0Alabama.\u00a0The recognition is based on a school\u2019s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups on assessments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0Alabama\u00a0schools\u00a0named\u00a0as\u00a0National Blue Ribbon Schools\u00a0were:\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

  • Cordova \u2013 Cordova Elementary School, Walker County Schools.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  • Huntsville \u2013 Mt. Carmel Elementary School, Madison County School System.<\/li>\n
  • Maylene \u2013 Creek View Elementary School, Alabaster City Schools.<\/li>\n
  • Pleasant Grove \u2013 Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, Jefferson County.<\/li>\n
  • Scottsboro \u2013 Skyline High School, Jackson County School District.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    With its 40th\u00a0cohort, the National\u00a0Blue Ribbon Schools\u00a0Program has bestowed approximately 10,000 awards to more than 9,700 schools. The National\u00a0Blue Ribbon School\u00a0award affirms and validates the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in striving for \u2013 and attaining \u2013 exemplary achievement. National Blue Ribbon Schools represent the full diversity of American schools and serve students of every background.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    While awardee schools represent the diverse fabric of American schools, they also share some core elements.\u202fNational\u00a0Blue Ribbon School\u00a0leaders articulate a vision of excellence and hold everyone to high standards. They demonstrate effective and innovative teaching and learning, and the schools value and support teachers and staff through meaningful professional learning. Data from many sources are used to drive instruction and every student strives for success. Families, communities, and educators work together toward common goals.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    National Blue Ribbon Schools serve as models of effective and innovative school practices for state and district educators and other schools throughout the nation. A National\u00a0Blue Ribbon School\u00a0flag gracing a school\u2019s entryway or on a flagpole is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.\u202f\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates:\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    • Exemplary High-Performing Schools<\/strong>\u00a0are among their state\u2019s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.<\/li>\n
    • Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools<\/strong>\u00a0are among their state\u2019s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school\u2019s student groups and all students.\u202fNominated schools also complete an extensive narrative application describing their school culture and philosophy, curriculum, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership structures, and parent and community involvement.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites nominations for the National\u00a0Blue Ribbon Schools\u00a0award from the top education official in all states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education.\u202f<\/p>\n
